About Garth Newydd

Ceredigion. It is a seven-bedroom house with a large lounge and a kitchen. There are two bathrooms with showers and toilets, as well as an additional separate toilet. The beds are comfortable, and most courses offer single rooms, although there are sometimes options to share if you wish.

The purpose of Garth Newydd is to create a fully immersive Welsh-language environment. When you enter the house, you leave your English at the door and try to get by over the weekend using the Welsh you have been learning. Yes, it can be a challenge, but it is also hugely rewarding. We often see a noticeable change in our guests as their confidence grows throughout the weekend, and many return again and again. To date, over 400 people have stayed with us.

Lampeter is a town where around 45% of the population can speak Welsh, and you will hear Welsh spoken daily in the streets, cafés, and shops. During your stay, we try to get out and about and, where possible, mix with local people at community events. In the house, we chat together, cook together, and eat together—and it is often during these everyday activities that learning happens in ways a classroom can’t provide. By the end of the stay, guests consistently feel they have made real progress.

We have numerous positive reviews on Google. We also occasionally offer slightly less intensive stays where Welsh does not have to be spoken at all times, although we still encourage you to use as much Welsh as you can.

Garth Newydd is run as a non-profit scheme, which is reflected in the affordability of our weekends. The project was set up by Marcus Whitfield, a Welsh learner since 2019, and is supported by tutors Nia Llewellyn and Virginia Steinkamp, who run some of the courses.
